Keeping a simple item by your car’s windscreen overnight prevents condensation build-up

Fighting frost and condensation: a winter fix for drivers
Fighting frost and condensation: a winter fix for drivers

As temperatures fall across Scotland and the rest of the UK, many drivers are waking up to the same nuisance: condensation and frost on their windscreens. It’s annoying, yes, but it can also lead to longer-term problems like mould forming inside the car. A TikTok user has shared a simple solution that’s catching on online — dehumidifier pouches.

That familiar winter hassle

Winter in the UK usually means frosty mornings, and drivers often find moisture building up inside their cars. Warm, damp air inside the vehicle meets the cold windscreen and the vapour turns to water droplets. Apart from the time spent clearing it, leftover moisture can encourage mould growth if it isn’t dealt with.

TikTok user @360_dimez shows the morning struggle in a clip captioned “POV: Everyone in the UK in two weeks”, featuring a frost-covered windscreen. The video also jokes about the universal need to defrost cars with the line “How girls really defrost their cars,” which lots of viewers related to.

A simple product that seems to work

@360_dimez suggests using dehumidifier bags as a game-changer for drivers. These small pouches sit on the dashboard overnight and act like moisture magnets, soaking up the damp air that would otherwise settle on the windscreen. There’s a colour indicator on the pouch — a blue dot turns pink when it’s full of water, showing it needs to be reheated to refresh its dehumidifying ability (reheating dries the pouch so it can be used again).

In his experience, “I used to do the same to get my windows clear, but then all that moisture on the inside of my windshield would show up.” He adds, “If that build-up of moisture does not get sorted it can turn into mould growth in the car.” He says the pouch kept his windscreen “completely dry” using just one item, even though they’re sold in a two-pack. The bags are on sale for £12 on TikTok and Amazon (down from the £20 he originally paid). He also reckons “these will probably sell out quick,” reflecting their growing popularity.

Where they fit and other tips

Part of the appeal is their low price and the way they tackle a widespread problem. “They’re on TikTok for £12 right now,” notes @360_dimez, which is handy for anyone wanting to sort condensation before the forecasted four-day snowfall.

That said, dehumidifier pouches aren’t the only option. Drivers can also:

  • turn on the defroster to blow air directly onto the windscreen,
  • use the air conditioning to dehumidify the interior,
  • switch off air recirculation, and
  • crack a window briefly to improve airflow and reduce humidity.

For a quick manual fix, keep a microfibre or anti-fog cloth in the car to wipe condensation away without leaving streaks.

Small accessories like these can make winter driving more comfortable and safer. As more UK motorists try different approaches, dehumidifier pouches — alongside the other tips above — could become a cheap, useful part of winter car care.
